Heated windshields cost $400 to $1,200 to replace, which is roughly 50 to 100 percent more than a standard windshield for the same vehicle. The higher price comes from embedded heating elements, specialized manufacturing processes, and limited aftermarket availability since most heated windshields require OEM glass. Vehicles commonly equipped with heated windshields include Ford F-150, Ford Expedition, Land Rover models, Subaru Outback and Forester with cold weather packages, Volvo models, and some BMW and Mercedes trims. In Arizona, where winter driving and frozen windshields are routine from November through March, heated windshields are a practical convenience feature worth maintaining during replacement. Insurance covers heated windshield replacement at the same rate as standard glass in Arizona, so drivers with zero-deductible comprehensive coverage still pay $0. If paying cash, you can opt for a standard non-heated windshield to save $200 to $500.

Two Types of Heated Windshields
Heated Wiper Zone
The more common and less expensive type. Heating elements are embedded only in the area where the wipers rest when parked (the lower portion of the windshield). This prevents the wipers from freezing to the glass and melts ice and snow from the wiper park area. The cost premium is $75-$175 over standard glass. Found on many Ford trucks, Subaru Outbacks, and various vehicles with cold-weather packages.
Full Heated Windshield
The entire windshield has fine wire heating elements embedded between the glass layers, similar to a rear defroster. This clears frost, ice, and condensation across the entire surface in minutes. The cost premium is $200-$500 over standard glass. Found primarily on Land Rover, BMW, Volvo, Mercedes, and some Ford models. The heating wires are extremely thin (nearly invisible) but make the glass significantly more expensive to manufacture and replace.
Why Heated Glass Costs So Much More
- Complex manufacturing: Embedding heating wires or conductive layers between glass sheets requires specialized equipment and tighter quality control.
- Electrical connections: Heated windshields have wiring connectors that must mate with the vehicle’s electrical system. Installation requires connecting these during replacement.
- Limited aftermarket: Few aftermarket manufacturers produce heated windshields, especially for full-heated models. This often means OEM-only availability at premium prices.
- Higher failure risk: Heated elements can be damaged during removal and installation, so technicians take extra care, which increases labor time slightly.
Can You Replace a Heated Windshield with Standard Glass?
Technically yes, but it is not recommended. If you replace a heated windshield with standard glass, you lose the heated feature permanently. The wiring harness will have an unused connector behind the dashboard, and the heated windshield button on your dash will do nothing. This can also trigger a dashboard warning light in some vehicles. Most importantly, if you later want to restore the heated feature, you will need to replace the windshield again.
If insurance is covering the replacement, they are required to replace with the same type of glass (heated with heated). If you are paying cash and want to save money, you can opt for standard glass, but weigh the lost functionality against the savings. In Arizona winters, a heated windshield is a genuinely useful feature. Check our insurance guide to see if you are covered.
